Benthic abundance and composition

Benthos and substrate: 'Benthos' refers to living organisms on the sea bottom (e.g. coral, seagrass, algae), but the term is often also used to include substrates considered non living (e.g. rock, rubble, sand, long time dead coral or reef matrix). The abundance describes the amount of benthic and substrate cover types or on the seabed. Where the composition describes the combination of these different bottom types at a predefined surface area.

With benthic field data collection the composition and abundance of the features that are making up the bottom is determined.
