- Area characteristics:
- Land or water;
- soft or hard bottom;
- roughness;
- steepness;
- remoteness and extent
- the accessibility (e.g. rough mountains with no roads, reefs with tidal differences);
- distance from bases with facilities to study site (e.g. town to outback savannah land, boat base to reef);
- extent of area (e.g. small park or complete state, part of a single reef or reef system).
