Ship groundings

Ship groundings are characterised in general by:

  • damage to bottom features (e.g. seagrass or coral cover), which could change composition and shape (e.g. bathymetry and rugosity),
  • rapid response monitoring of the damaged area is required close after the impact the area impacted is in generally relatively small to the size of reef,
  • ship grounding can result in oil spill.
