Satellite imaging radar
Satellite laser, sounding or profiling systems are active sensors that are mounted on a satellite. The sensor transmits a beam of visble to infrared light which is attenuated by the constituents of the atmospheric column, in proportion to the type and amount of material present. The sensor measures the distance and amount of scattering. For a summary of atmospheric profiling instruments see www.arm.gov/instruments.
